Poetry Out Loud Finals
The regional finals for NH’s 2010 Poetry Out Loud Competition, presented by the N.H. State Council on the Arts, happen next week! The public is invited to attend, free of charge. The schedule follows:

    * March 8, 7 p.m., Walker Auditorium, Southern NH University (Eastern Regional)
    * March 9, 7 p.m.,  Silver Center, Plymouth State University (Northern Regional)
    * March 12, 7 p.m., Simon Center, New England College (West Regional)

Commissioner’s Roundtable set for April 6, 2010
N.H. Department of Cultural Resources Commissioner Van McLeod will host a Commissioner’s Roundtable on Cultural & Heritage Tourism at the Historic Belknap Mill, 25 Beacon Street East, Laconia. The topic of the session, to be held Tuesday, April 6, 2010 from noon to 2 p.m., will be “Reach out! How partners can help you achieve your goals.” Tourism professionals and interested people are invited to attend the roundtable, which is free. Participants are encouraged to bring their own lunches (or pick something up “to go” in Laconia). Directions to the Historic Belknap Mill are available at http://belknapmill.org/contact.htm. Please bring a nonperishable item or two to be donated to a local food bank. Sonny Rollins to Receive 51st Annual Edward MacDowell Medal
The MacDowell Colony in Peterborough will present its 51st Edward MacDowell Medal to jazz composer Sonny Rollins on Sunday, August 15. Since 1960, The MacDowell Medal has been awarded annually to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to his/her field, and this year marks the first time the colony has recognized the field of jazz. Rollins joins an impressive list of past recipients, including Leonard Bernstein, Alice Munro, I.M. Pei., Merce Cunningham, and Georgia O’Keeffe. Beginning at 12:15 p.m., the award ceremony will take place on The MacDowell Colony grounds, which will be open to the public for the festivities and celebration. NEA Names Director of Theater and Musical Theater
The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has named Ralph Remington director of theater and musical theater as of March 15, 2010. Most recently, Remington was a Minneapolis city council member, representing Ward 10 from 2006 through 2009. Prior to that public service, he worked as artistic associate with Arena Stage in Washington, D.C.; producing artistic director and founder of the Pillsbury House Theatre in Minneapolis; and as an actor with the Guthrie Theater and Illusion Theatre, both of Minneapolis. He will manage the NEA’s grantmaking for theater and musical theater, as well as develop partnerships to advance the theater field as a whole, and lead large-scale theater projects such as the NEA’s New Play Development Program. Poetry Society of N.H. Launches Web Site
The Poetry Society of New Hampshire’s web site, www.poetrysocietyofnewhampshire.org, is up and running. On the site, readers can find poems, information about the society, its programs and contests, and a calendar of poetry readings in and around the state. The site, designed and maintained by Rainer Schwake of artstream in Rochester, N.H., was made possible in part by an FY20 Mini Grant from the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts.

The Center for the Book at the N.H. State Library
The Center for the Book at the New Hampshire State Library received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to coordinate The Big Read: New Hampshire Reads To Kill a Mockingbird. As part of The Big Read, libraries, schools, bookstores, and other organizations across the Granite State will be holding nearly 200 events throughout the month of March, including book discussions, film screenings, a panel discussion on adapting literature to film, presentations by local attorneys, programs on topics related to the themes of Harper Lee’s novel. Smoky Quartz Productions
Smoky Quartz Productions, the collective name for a group of professional filmmakers from New Hampshire who entered the Premiere 7DayPSA Competition in Providence, R.I., returned to the Granite State with five trophies after an awards ceremony held in Providence. In addition to landing the top overall award, the team was recognized with three individual awards: Best Director to Adam Jones of Henniker, Best Cinematographer to Gary Anderson of Deerfield, and Best Editor to Marc Dole of Portsmouth.  Smoky Quartz also received an Official Client Selection trophy, which indicates that Big Sisters of Rhode Island has endorsed the team’s Public Service Announcement; that award will be held by Production Coordinator Adam Donovan, a New Hampshire native.
